Word stress and meaning
Some English words have the same spelling but different meanings.
Often the meaning changes according to which syllable is stressed.
Choose the correct stress for the following words. (The stressed syllable is
in capital letters.)
1. Are you (i) content with the (ii) content of
the course?
A. (i)=CON-tent (ii)=con-TENT
B. (i)=con-TENT (ii)=CON-tent
2. Farmer Brown (i) produces the best (ii) produce.
A. (i)=PRO-duce (ii)=pro-DUCE
B (i)=pro-DUCE (ii)=PRO-duce
3. We give (i) presents to people; we (ii) present people with prizes, certificates,
etc.
A. (i)=PRE-sent (ii)=pre-SENT
B. (i)=pre=SENT (ii)=PRE-sent
4. Work hard to perfect your style, because you're not perfect yet.
A. (i)=PER-fect (ii)=per-FECT
B. (i)=per-FECT (ii)=PER-fect
