Korea flag. Korean - English Language Basics

The Korean language uses an easy-to-learn alphabet - han-gul (meaning "one-script") - dating from the fourteenth century, which was originally designed to depict the actual articulation of the sounds made by the speaker's mouth in pronunciation. han-gul originally consisted of 28 symbols, although 4 are no longer used. han-gul has 10 vowels and 14 consonants.

As in Japanese, the Korean language places emphasis on degrees of formality depending on the relative social status of the interlocutors.

kimchi and tae kwon do are probably the two most well-known Korean words that have found their way into English. See below for a list of resources for further study of the Korean language.
