Railway stations in Japan are every bit as much marketplaces as they are hubs of transportation. A concourse or platform free of some kind of retailing is extremely rare. While much of the retailing is from machines, and a lot from stores with premises in railway stations, both within and outside and wickets, a lot of it is temporary.

Most of the temporary stalls that set up are for food or clothing. The stall featured here was at Japan Rail's Kashiwa station in Chiba prefecture and was selling mainly clothing and bathroom accessories: gloves, socks, hats, ties, towels, belts, bags and the like.
One of the salesmen kept up a constant banter announcing that it was a sale, to please look hard at what was on offer, that this was your 'last chance', and naming certain featured items on sale.
