Nagoya Subway

Nagoya's subway system dates from 1958 and there are six lines: the Higashiyama Line (yellow), Meijo Line (purple), Meiko Line (two purple parallel lines), Tsurumai Line (blue), Sakura-dori Line (red) and Kamiida Line (pink). These lines intersect with other urban rail networks including Meitetsu Railways, JR, Kintetsu Railways and the Linimo maglev train.

The main intersecting stations are Nagoya Station, Kanayama Station, Imaike, Gokiso and Sakae Station. Prices start from 200 yen with a maximum fare of 320 yen and it is possible to buy one-day passes for the subway system and for the subway and bus networks combined.

There are high speed express trains to Chubu International Airport from Nagoya Station (30 mins) and Kanayama Station (25 mins).

Nagoya's loop line is the Meijo Line which connects the major stations of Kanayama, Kamimaezu, Motoyama & Yagoto. Fujigaoka is the connecting station for the Linimo and Heian-dori Station connects with the Kamida Line and onwards to Inuyama. Kaneyama, Chikusa and Ozone connect with the JR Chuo Line.

From Horita Station on the Meijo Line it is a short walk to Meitetsu Horita Station on the Meitetsu Nagoya Line with links to Gifu and Toyohashi. From Kami Otai on the Tsurumai Line there are connections to Inuyama and from Araike there are trains on the Meitetsu Toyota Line to Nisshin and Toyota City. A short walk through Atsuta Jingu from Jingu Nishi on the Meijo Line brings you to Jingu-mae Station on the Meitetsu Tokoname Line with connections to Rinku Tokoname and a change of trains to the Meitetsu Airport Line to Chubu International Airport.

There are one-day passes available for the subway (740 yen) and for the subway and buses (850 yen). The Yurika pre-paid card (available in 1000, 2200, 3300 and 5600 yen cards) is valid for subway, buses, local Meitetsu trains and buses, the Aonami Line and the Linimo. The Do-nichi Eco Kippu is a pre-paid card for 600 yen available on Saturdays and Sundays which gives unlimited travel for the day on subways and buses and reductions on admission to Nagoya's Science Museum, Zoo and Nagoya Castle.

Most lines start at around 5am and finish at midnight. At rush hours Nagoya subway trains are crowded and there is a women-only carriage during the hours of 8am-9am on the Higashiyama Line through Sakae, Fushimi to Nagoya Station.
