Transportation: Getting Around in Tokyo
- The circular JR Yamanote Line connects with most major Tokyo stations.
- If you are staying in Tokyo for any length of time consider buying a subway pass.
- Trains and buses stop operating in the city between about midnight and 6am.
- A taxi costs 10 (c.USD6.70) for the first 2km (i.e. mile and a quarter) and and then 0 (c.USD0.80) per 288m (944 feet) or 105 seconds spent traveling less than 10km/h (6 mph). There is an additional 20% surcharge between the hours of 11pm and 5am. A fare that comes to over 9,000 gets a 10% discount.
- There is a very good chance that your taxi driver does not know how to get to your destination (even though most taxis now have digital navigation, many drivers are unable to use if effectively). Therefore, try and arm yourself not only with the name of the area or building in Japanese script, but also a phone number and, ideally, a map.
- If you have a map with you, insist that the driver studies it before he starts off. They often can't be bothered, and it costs you.
- To hail a taxi, identify a taxi with a red light showing on the dashboard, smile (especially if you're a foreigner!) and raise your arm - anywhere.
