Lake Shinji ((宍道湖), near Matsue in Shimane Prefecture, is Japan's seventh largest lake. (Lake Biwa is the biggest lake). Lake Shinji is connected to the Japan Sea through Nakaumi Lagoon and the area is an important habitat for birds and shellfish.
