Pounding mochi (餅) rice cakes is a popular New Year tradition in Japan and mochi is traditionally eaten in Japan at this time. Mochi can be grilled and eaten with soy sauce and dried seaweed or placed in noodle soup. Mochi can be difficult to swallow and a number of people choke and die in Japan while trying to digest them.
