Mount Hiei (比叡山) in north eastern Kyoto is a sacred mountain lying between Kyoto and Shiga. Enryakuji Temple sits at the top of Mt. Hiei to guard the city below from evil forces as the north east direction was considered the direction from which bad influences could descend on the city.
