Rakanji Temple Stone Bridge

Japan flag. Photos | Images of Japan: Stone Bridge

This stone bridge is at Rakanji Temple in Iwami Ginzan in Shimane Prefecture, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and famous for its statues of the 500 rakan (arhats). Iwami Ginzan was an important silver mine that helped finance the Tokugawa regime during the Edo period (1603-1867). The technical know-how for arched stone bridges was brought to Japan from China.
