Air Travel To Japan

The major international airports in Japan are Narita for Tokyo and its surroundings.
Kansai International Airport (KIX) for Osaka, Kyoto and western Japan.
Chubu International Airport (Centrair) for Nagoya, Aichi and central Japan.
Chitose Airport for Sapporo and Hokkaido.
Fukuoka Airport for Kyushu.
Naha for Okinawa and the Ryukyu Islands.
Niigata for the Japan Sea Coast.

Chubu International Airport follows Kansai International Airport as major, new, off-shore regional airports in the regions outside of Tokyo Narita Airport, where the majority of international flights arrive.
Kobe Airport
, which is another off-shore aiport, opened in February 2006 and serves only domestic routes at present.

For flights to continental Asia, Kagoshima, Nagasaki, and Kumamoto airports (all in Kyushu) are very convenient.

In recent years, travel costs between the US to Japan have dropped; this may change however as a result of rising oil prices. The major carriers are All Nippon Airlines (ANA), Japan Airlines (JAL), United Airlines, Northwest, and Korean Air. The non-Japanese airlines tend to be a bit lower priced, with service to match. To Canada, Air Canada has low-cost flights from Vancouver and Toronto.

Air France, JAL, Emirates, British Airways (BA), Virgin, Finnair, and ANA operate direct flights to Tokyo from Europe. Lufthansa, JAL, Finnair, ANA also fly non-stop to Kansai International Airport (KIX) in Osaka. The new Nagoya airport, Chubu, has also attracted considerable interest because of its (relatively) low landing fees of 655,000 yen for a 767. Cathay Pacific, Austrian Airlines, Emirates, Alitalia, Korean Air, Asiana Airlines, Thai Air, Qatar, Singapore Airlines, Malaysian Air, KLM and Aeroflot also offer connecting flights to mainland Europe.

Most Asian countries have direct daily flights to Japan. Bangkok, Singapore, and Hong Kong are the primary hubs. Kansai has direct flights to Kathmandu, and Chubu has many flights to cities in Asia.

To the antipodes, Cathay Pacific, Garuda, Quantas, Air New Zealand and JAL have flights to Australia. Malaysian Airlines and Thai Airlines also fly to New Zealand.

Discounts are available on domestic flights are widely available.

Multilingual travel agents are common in any large Japanese city. HIS and NO. 1 are among the lowest priced agents.
