Sapporo Station is the main railway station used by visitors to Sapporo in Hokkaido and is an impressive modern building with a tower completed in 2003.
The 178m, 38 storey JR Tower is presently the tallest building in Hokkaido.
Since the opening of the new Sapporo Station building, Sapporo Station is developing into an accommodation, shopping, dining and retail area competing with Odori and Susukino, both a short distance to the south. Many bars, cafes, restaurants and shops have opened and thrived in the area surrounding Sapporo Station.
Sapporo Station includes the Apia underground shopping mall, the Paseo mall, an event square, a hotel, a Daimaru department store and the ESTA building with 10 floors of shops and restaurants, a BIC camera store and the Sapporo Ramen Kyowakoku ramen theme park on the top floor.
Train Services From Sapporo Station
Sapporo Station serves JR Hokkaido trains on the Hakodate Main Line including train services to Abashiri, Hakodate, Otaru (30-40 minutes), Wakkanai (5 hours), Asahikawa (80 minutes) and Kutchan for Niseko.
The Chitose Line links Tomakomai (a ferry port with ships to Nagoya, Sendai and Oarai in Ibaraki) with Sapporo and joins with the Hakodate Line.
Rail services on the Chitose Line include the Hokuto & Super Hokuto trains running between Sapporo and Hakodate in 3 hours 30 minutes and 3 hours 10 minutes respectively, as well as the frequent (every 15 minutes) express train between New Chitose Airport and Sapporo Station, which take 36 minutes to complete the journey.
Other connections include the Super Ozora limited express between Sapporo and Kushiro (6 hours), the Suzuran limited express from Sapporo to Muroran (3 hours), and the Super Tokachi limited express linking Sapporo with Obihiro (2 hours, 33 minutes).

The Cassiopeia overnight limited express runs between Ueno Station and Sapporo in 16 hours and 30 minutes and is Japan's premier luxury train. The Hokutosei overnight limited express completes the journey in a similar time. Both trains stop at Sendai and Morioka on the journey north from Ueno Station.
The Marimo and Hamanasu overnight express trains run between Sapporo and Kushiro and Aomori and Sapporo.
The Sassho Line operates between Soen Station one stop west of Sapporo Station on the Hakodate Line and Shin-Totsukawa.
Sapporo Station is a major intersection of the Sapporo subway connecting to the Namboku and Toho lines.

Sapporo Station is a terminal for both local and Hokkaido highway buses. Highway buses run from outside Sapporo Station to Tokyo (7 hours, 30 mins), Kyoto (4 hours), Yokohama (8 hours, 20 mins), Nagoya (4 hours), Sendai (8 hours, 30mins), Niigata (4 hours, 40 mins), Takayama (3 hours) and other destinations.
Airport Limousine Buses to New Chitose Airport take 80 minutes (fare 1000 yen) and buses to Okadama Airport take 30 minutes (fare 400 yen). The Sapporo Station Bus terminal is just in front of the JR Tower.

Sapporo Station is a major shopping and dining area with the Paseo Mall in the station building, the underground Apia Mall, branches of the Daimaru and Tokyu department stores, an Irish pub and the 10 floor ESTA building. The JR Tower has an observation deck with great views over the city on a clear day. Car rental companies congregate around the station as well as Eki chari bicycle hire.
Inside the station building the Hokkaido-Sapporo "Food and Tourism" Information Center has a cafe and small supermarket selling local goods, Internet access (100 yen for 10 minutes) and information brochures in English, Chinese and Korean. Visitors can book hotels here in Sapporo and throughout Hokkaido.
