Japan Museums: Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum

Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum 東京都美術館

The Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum (Tokyoto Bijitsukan) is a large brick-faced museum located in Ueno Park.

The Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum has been a presence in Ueno since 1926, though the present buildings date from much later, with some of the new buildings designed in 1975 by Japanese architect Kunio Maekawa (1905-1986) and renewed again from 2010-2012.

The Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum's six galleries display a regularly changing array of various artistic genres, including painting, sculpture, ceramics and calligraphy, showcasing the works of contemporary Japanese artists as well as artists from overseas. Recent exhibitions have featured the art of Leonardo da Vinci and El Greco.

The Museum Gallery is where special exhibitions are held, and the other five galleries are rented by groups for temporary exhibitions of their works.

The Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum includes a restaurant and museum shop.
