Hokuriku Shinkansen

Hokuriku Shinkansen 北陸新幹線

The Hokuriku Shinkansen is a shinkansen (bullet train) line between Tokyo Station and Kanazawa Station.

The Hokuriku Shinkansen now makes it possible to travel between Tokyo, Toyama and Kanazawa in much less time than before. The extension to Toyama in Toyama Prefecture and Kanazawa in Ishikawa Prefecture opened in March 2015.

The first part of the line between Takasaki and Nagano in Nagano Prefecture, opened in 1997 in time for the Nagano Winter Olympics in 1998, and was originally called the Nagano Shinkansen. The Hokuriku Shinkansen is planned to extend west to Fukui and Tsuruga in Fukui Prefecture by 2025.

Train Types

Four types of trains run on the Hokuriku Shinkansen: the Kagayaki limited-stop service between Tokyo and Kanazawa, the Hakutaka multi-stop service between Tokyo and Kanazawa, the Tsurugi all-stop service between Toyama and Kanazawa and the Asama, a multi-stop service from Tokyo to Nagano.

Hokuriku Connections & Japan Rail Passes

The Japan Rail Pass is valid on the all trains on Hokuriku Shinkansen routes. The Kagayaki shinkansen has both Green Class carriages and the new luxury Gran class cars.

The Hakutaka shinkansen stops more frequently and non-reserved seats are available.

The full number of possible stops between Tokyo and Kanazawa on the Hokuriku Shinkansen is: Tokyo, Ueno, Omiya, Kumagaya, Honjo-Waseda, Takasaki, Annaka-Haruna, Karuizawa, Sakudaira, Ueda, Nagano, Iiyama, Joetsumyoko, Itoigawa, Kurobe-Unazukionsen, Toyama, Shin-Takaoka and Kanazawa.
