The Ainu were the indigenous inhabitants of northern Japan and Hokkaido until they were marginalized by the expansionist Meiji state post 1870. Ainu language, culture and dress were quite distinct from that of the Japanese and only since the 1970's have the Ainu won recognition as a separate people with a separate identity.
