Photos | Images of Japan: On bridge of Shinsenen Temple, Kyoto, Japan
Shinsen-en Garden and the Shinsen-den temple, in western Kyoto near Nijo-jo (Nijo Castle), is famous for this graceful, arching, vermillion bridge over its temple garden pond. The area covered by the temple grounds was originally part of the Heiankyo Palace, which burnt down in 1177. Permission to build a temple here was given by the Tokugawa shogunate. The Shinsen-en gardens still reflect the Chinese influence of the original design.
