Japan Images: Lake Towada (Towada-ko), Aomori Prefecture, Tohoku, Japan
Lake Towada (十和田湖) on the borders of Aomori Prefecture and Akita Prefecture in the Tohoku region of northern Japan, is part of Towada Hachimantai National Park. Various pleasure boats provide cruises on what is the largest crater lake on Honshu Island and Japan's 12th largest lake. Oirase Gorge, known for its fall colors, is situated along the Oirase River, which flows out from Lake Towada. Other attractions along the Towada-ko lake front are Towada Shrine in the small town of Yasumiya and a small nature museum. Two large peninsulas protrude nearly into the center of the lake from the shore.
