Hakata Station in Fukuoka was the terminus of the Sanyo Shinkansen from the main island of Honshu before the extension of the Kyushu Shinkansen to Kagoshima. Hakata Station links Fukuoka city in Kyushu with Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya, Kyoto, Hiroshima and Shin-Yamaguchi. The Kyushu Shinkansen expanded to Kumamoto and Kagoshima in March 2011.

Hakata Station is also the major hub station for Kyushu with services to many other cities on the island.

Hakata Station was rebuilt to coincide with the opening of the new Kyushu Shinkansen line, which connects Fukuoka south to Kagoshima in just over an hour with a spur line to run west to Nagasaki in the future.

Hakata Station serves JR trains including the Sanyo Shinkansen; the Kagoshima Main Line services to Kokura (with connections to Oita, Beppu, Nobeoka, Miyazaki and Kagoshima on the Nippo Main Line along Kyushu's east coast), Dazaifu, Tosu, Kurume, Kumamoto, Yatsushiro, and Kagoshima; the Fukuhoku Yutaka Line to Kurosaki; the short Hakata-Minami Line 8.5km to Hakata-Minami Station and the Kuko Line of the Fukuoka city subway, which links Hakata Station to Fukuoka Airport and Tenjin Station, where many of Fukuoka's attractions can be found such as Canal City, Kushida Shrine and the many yatai for which the city is famous.

Buses From Hakata Station

Hakata Station is also a terminal for local Nishitetsu buses including the 100 yen loop bus and the Fukuoka City Loop Bus "Green" which takes in the main attractions of the city including Tenjin, Momochi and Ohori Park and runs mainly on weekends and national holidays. Highway buses with services to Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, and other destinations leave from Hakata Station Bus Terminal to the right as you leave the main Hakataguchi exit. A Nishitetsu bus also connects Hakata Station Bus Terminal with Dazaifu in 40 minutes.

Hotels Near Hakata Station

The area around the station has numerous hotels including ANA Crowne Plaza Fukuoka, the 360-room Hotel Nikko Fukuoka, Hakata Green Hotel, Hotel Century Art, Comfort Hotel Hakata, SunLife Hotel 1, Hakata Miyako Hotel, Hakata Clio Court and the President Hotel Hakata. Car rental companies abound near Hakata Station, as do banks and big stores such as Yodobashi Camera, Tokyu Hands and Hankyu Department Store.

The new station has two main entrances/exits: Hakataguchi & Chikushiguchi.

A Tourist Information Office (Tel: 092 431 3003) is located inside the Hakata Station building along with a number of cafes, convenience stores and souvenir shops.
