Chanting Pilgrims At Rokkaku-do

Chanting at Rokkaku-do Temple, Kyoto 頂法寺 (六角堂)

On a muggy late May Sunday just before noon, a group of elderly pilgrims dressed from head to toe in white made their offerings at the altar of downtown Kyoto's Rokakku-do Temple. Then, in unison, they began to chant.

One kept time, while the twenty or so put their hands together in prayer, bowed their heads, and chanted. People in the background move about and ring the temple bells.
