Tokyo Area Guides: Toyosu
Toyosu in Koto-ku, eastern Tokyo is a large man made, reclaimed island originally created in the late 1930's, close to Odaiba to the south. Toyosu is the location of one of Tokyo's largest shopping malls LaLaPort and will be the new venue of the relocated Tsukiji Fish Market from 2016.
Toyosu's attractions include Urban Dock LaLaPort, a huge shopping mall opened in the 1980's, which includes a cinema, numerous restaurants and cafes and Kidzania, a theme park aimed at children between the ages of 3-15 who can act out various adult professions including doctors, judges, ANA pilots and chefs in a recreated small town.
LaLaPort has over 200 shops including Banana Republic, Gap, Lacoste, Lush, Muji, a Pokemon Center (Tokyo Bay), Tower Records, Toys R Us, Ugg, Uniqlo and Zara, and parking for an incredible 4,000 cars. Eateries at LaLaPort include Ben & Jerry's, Freshness Burger, Krispy Kreme, McDonalds, Starbucks and Subway.
Toyosu Park, right on the water front is a popular green space for families to enjoy picnics, relax and play sports.
The Gas Museum, is aimed at young children and is a free facility, aiming to teach kids about gas as a source of energy and heat. The roof garden of the Gas Museum building has a spacious lawn with fantastic views.
Toyosu was also the location of Japan's first ever American-style convenience store, a Seven-Eleven, which opened in 1974.
Walking south from the Gas Museum is the MIFA Football Park with a number of outdoor futsal pitches and a cafe. Right next door is the Wild Magic Urban Outdoor Park which is a picnic and BBQ spot for families.
A number of large condominiums such as Park City Toyosu, The Toyosu Tower and City Towers Toyosu have been built in Toyosu, which is a slightly cheaper alternative for finding an apartment in Tokyo.
Large skyscrapers in Toyosu include the Toyosu Center Building and Annex.
From Tokyo Station, take the JR Keihin-Tohoku Line to Yurakucho Stationand then the Yurakucho Line to Toyosu. Journey time is about 10 minutes. The Yurikamome Line runs from Toyosu Station to Shimbashi Station in Shiodome in a general U-shape via Odaiba.
The Tokyo Water Bus stops in Toyosu near LaLaPort. There are water bus stops at: Hinode Pier, Asakusa (Azuma Bridge), Hamarikyu, Toyosu, Harumi, Tokyo Rinkai Fukutoshin Area, Palette Town, Tokyo Big Sight, Ooi Seashore Park and Shinagawa Aquarium.
