Go to Shinjuku station to activate your Hakone Free Pass and board a train for Hakone Yumoto (1h30 journey, details in your travel pack, all included).

The train gradually leaves Japan's megalopolis behind as it winds its way through the valleys of the Mount Fuji region. You will arrive in Hakone in the late morning. Return to Ichinoyu Shinkan ryokan or a ryokan of the same category to drop off your small bag and explore the region.

You'll be charmed by the magnificent scenery of this area, Lake Ashi and its view of Mount Fuji (on a clear day!). Not forgetting the Owakudani volcanic site, accessible by cable car. All transport (train, bus, cable car...) is included in your package.

Guided excursion by minibus to Uji, a town renowned for producing the best matcha (powdered green tea) in Japan. Tour the Japanese countryside in a minibus with a guide, passing through green tea fields and meeting the producers!

Along the way, the first minka, or Japanese country houses, make their appearance and you take the small country road that runs alongside the river on its right bank. Signs of civilisation are gradually disappearing and the exuberance of the Japanese vegetation adds to the contrast.

Next, discover one of the most important plantations of Japanese green tea. Strolling through these Tuscan-like valleys, which look like endless "French gardens", is a unique and relaxing experience. Monkeys can often be seen frolicking in groups in these labyrinths of greenery.

You will, of course, taste several types of tea from the surrounding fields and try to learn about the subtleties of this beverage. But more importantly, you'll experience the warmth of Japanese hospitality and the pleasure of sharing a moment with passionate people.

At the end of the day, you will return to Kyoto. After this little escapade in the valleys that saw the birth of Japanese tea, you can bet that the few centilitres of luminous green at the bottom of your cup will now take on a whole new flavour...

*The day of the Uji excursion is subject to change. It will be either a Wednesday or a Sunday.

  • Day 10 : Excursions around Kyoto

Here are a few ideas for excursions around Kyoto:

    - Hikone, a little marvel perched on Lake Biwa, one of the few original Japanese castles still in existence and one of the most delightful (30min one-way train journey).

    - Miyama, nicknamed "The Beautiful Mountain" with its thatched houses, crafts and rural recipes. A delightful getaway just a stone's throw from Kyoto (2hrs by train and bus).

    - Lake Biwa is best visited for its scenery and the shrines scattered along its shores. But the lake has another hidden treasure: its beaches! Located mainly on the western shore, they offer a few kilometres of clear sand in the shade of pine trees, as well as the promise of a swim in warm, clear water... without the inconvenience of salt water! (20 min by train)

  • Day 11 : Between temples and deer

We recommend a 50-minute drive to Nara by train, included in your package.

Visit Nara, Japan's first fixed capital in the 8th century.

    Discover :

    - The Kasuga Taisha Shinto shrine and its thousands of lanterns

    - Todaiji, with its large bronze Buddha and the imposing Nan-Daimon Gate

    - Kofukuji temple and its delightful pagoda

Return to Kyoto and a sunset stop at Fushimi Inari, Kyoto's immense shrine of 10,000 torii. If you wish to be accompanied on this day, one of our English-speaking guides will reveal all the secrets of Japan's first capital (optional, return trip from Kyoto).

  • Day 12 : Between tradition and modernity

There are still plenty of places to discover, depending on what you fancy : the Arashiyama bamboo grove district, the Shimogamo shrine or the Daitoku-ji temple complex... or the famous manga museum !

Don't hesitate to take a look at the "Activities in Kyoto" tab for an overview of all our activities and excursions in Kyoto. You can book directly on our website.

  • Day 13 : Departure for the capital of Kansai

For your second day in Osaka, we recommend the following itinerary:

    - Osaka Kaiyûkan Aquarium, the world's largest aquarium in terms of volume

    - The Tennoji district and its Shitenno-ji Buddhist temple, one of the oldest in Japan

    - Spa World, Japan's largest thermal baths (onsen)

    - Shinseikai, with its retro charm

    - DenDen machi, the technologeek village

    - Finish off in Dotonbori, the liveliest district of the city

For lunch, we recommend you visit a Takoyaki restaurant, one of the city's specialities! These are fried dumplings filled with octopus, and they're absolutely delicious!

  • Day 15 : Discover Okayama

Shinkansen journey to Himeji (approx. 35 minutes, free with your Japan Rail Pass).

A symbol of the town and known as one of the most beautiful in Japan, Himeji's famous "White Heron Castle" can be seen as soon as you arrive by train. Located at the end of the wide Otemae-dôri artery, the keep overlooks the town. Built in the 14th century, this is one of the few Japanese castles not to be a modern replica, and to be so well preserved.

Continue on to Okayama (about 20 minutes, free with your Japan Rail Pass). Check into your hotel between the station and the castle.

Take a stroll through the sumptuous Korakuen Garden, one of the most famous gardens in Japan. Spread over 14 hectares, it was completed in 1700. There are tea houses, large lakes, peaceful hills, maple forests, a few paths and waterfalls and even a lotus pond. Its name means 'garden of further rejoicing', a reference to a quotation from Confucius.

The castle, nicknamed 'Raven Castle', is famous for its rare black colour. It is an excellent 1966 replica of the original version, the original plans having been copied for the reconstruction.

Okayama is also home to a number of fascinating museums. The Prefectural Museum displays a variety of objects discovered in different areas of Okayama Prefecture, ranging from prehistoric artefacts to the Edo (1603-1868) and Meiji (1868-1912) periods. The art museum exhibits 2,000 works by famous artists from the prefecture. The Oriental Museum, on the other hand, focuses on art from the Near and Middle East.

  • Day 16 : Flanery in Kurashiki

    Breakfast at the hotel.

Travel to the romantic town of Kurashiki, a 17-minute train ride from Okayama (included with JR Pass).

Kurashiki, a former merchant metropolis lined with canals, is sure to charm you:

    - The Bikan district, with its typical architecture

    - The Ohara Museum, home to paintings by Monet, Matisse, Renoir and others

    - The Folk Art Museum, dedicated to regional history

Return to Okayama at the end of the day.

  • Day 17 : History in the spotlight

Shinkansen train journey to Hiroshima (approx. 1 hour, free with your Japan Rail Pass).

Check into your Intergate hotel or 3* hotel in the same category.

    - Visit the park and the peace memorial, important sites in the country's history.

    - Admire the Genbaku Dome, the only building to survive the explosion of the first atomic bomb on Hiroshima on 6 August 1945.

    - Discover the sumptuous castle and its park filled with cherry trees before sampling one of Hiroshima's specialities: okonomiyaki!

  • Day 18 : The sacred island

A short 30-minute train and boat journey to the island of Miyajima, where you can discover this little piece of island paradise nicknamed "the island of the gods", as the entire island is sacred.

You can admire the Itsukushima-jinja shrine and its great portal (ootorii) built into the sea.

Take the cable car up to Mount Misen and walk back down. A breathtaking view of Hiroshima Bay awaits you!

Don't miss the Daisho-in Buddhist temple, nestling among the trees at the foot of Mount Misen. Hundreds of Buddhist statues can be seen all along the pavilions and paths.

In the late afternoon, head for Hiroshima.

  • Day 19 : Back to Tokyo

    Breakfast at the hotel.

Return to the capital by Shinkansen (approx. 3h45)

Settle into your OMO3 Tokyo Akasaka by Hoshino Resorts hotel or hotel in the same category.

  • Pets are not accepted.
  • Children and babies are accepted. From 3 to 11 years, a child rate is available. They will be offered a standard adult bed in each accommodation and a standard seat on public transport. A "baby" rate is available for children aged 0 to 2 inclusive. This rate corresponds to the allocation of a cot in most of the accommodation on the chosen tour. However, we cannot guarantee a cot in every accommodation.
  • This programme may be subject to change due to imperatives such as weather conditions or any other case of force majeure. Please note that, due to the current situation, any information mentioned is subject to change or adaptation.
  • You will receive your travel documents as follows:
  • Travel book by e-mail before departure
  • Paper documents (airport transfer ticket, transport card, Japan Rail Pass voucher) and Pocket WiFi when you arrive at the airport with our airport assistant.
  • As this tour has been designed for families (at least one adult with at least one child/teenager), it is not possible for single people to book this tour. We recommend the "Japan solo" tour or any other tour accessible to solo travellers.
    • N.B.: In rare cases, mainly during the very high season, stages may be reversed. You will be informed of this in your mini travel guide. Thank you for your understanding.

Your accommodation:

  • Some hotels may ask you to pay a tourist tax on arrival. This depends on the town and even the hotel, as some do not include it in the cost of the reservation. It generally amounts to ¥200/night/person (around €1.60) but may be a little higher in 4-star hotels. It must be paid in cash at the hotel reception. For traditional Japan Experience accommodation, it is included in the initial price of the tour.
  • Ryokan in Hakone: in the ryokan, you will sleep on comfortable futons placed on the tatami mat. The room has a private washbasin and WC. As is customary in Japanese ryokan, the "onsen" bathroom is shared (not mixed) unless you take the "private bathroom in the room" option. Enjoy a private Japanese bathroom (traditional or modern onsen) in your room. This option is recommended for mixed couples, families, people who are modest or have clearly visible tattoos. The 4* ryokan (see 4* option) have comfortable futons raised either on western beds or in a traditional tatami room. The bathrooms and toilets in 4* ryokans are private. As this is traditional accommodation, people with the same reservation are grouped together in spacious rooms that can accommodate up to 5 people.
  • Room for 2 people: Rooms for two people in Western hotels have 2 single beds (twin rooms) by default, which can usually be placed closer together.
  • Room for 3 people: If there are 3, 5 or more of you, you will be allocated a triple room.
  • In the case of a group order (> 5 people), it is possible, depending on hotel availability, that not all members of the group will be accommodated in the same hotel. The aim is nevertheless to be close to each other. - Hotel names: The names given on the site are for information only. In the event of unavailability, an establishment of equivalent standing will be scheduled.

Your transport :

Flights are not included in this tour. Do not hesitate to contact us if you wish to include flights in your order: economy class flights with stopovers or direct flights, air upgrades to eco-premium or business, departures from the provinces or abroad: we will be able to advise you.

The departure and end dates shown on this page are for your stay in Japan. You will arrive in Japan via Tokyo (Narita or Haneda airports) and will also depart from Tokyo. On departure, you will have to leave Europe the day before and land at 4pm at the latest to be there before 8pm to meet your travel angel in the traditional Tokyo flat. The return flight is the same day, given the favourable time difference, with a minimum take-off time of 9.30am. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you are unsure or need any further information about the choice of international flights.

  • Airport transfers: The shared limousine shuttle bus departs from the airport and stops at a platform located between 1 and 15 minutes' walk from your accommodation. Our airport assistant in Tokyo will take you to the platform to pick up the airport transfer. The transfer to the Japan Experience flat is unassisted. If you wish to be accompanied from the airport to your accommodation, choose the "Accompanied airport transfer" option. This transfer is made by shuttle or shared bus, with other clients leaving for the same hotel or a hotel close to yours. These transfers leave between 1.5 and 3 hours after your flight's scheduled arrival time, and stops can be made before your hotel. If you would like a private, non-stop transfer directly after the actual arrival of your flight, feel free to take the "Private taxi from the airport" option. Please note: due to the large number of changes to flight times by airlines, if you are notified of a change to your arrival time less than 72 hours before your departure, and the change exceeds 45 minutes, we cannot guarantee your airport shuttle. In this case, you will have to take a taxi at your own expense, requesting a refund from your airline for an abusive schedule change. The same applies to your return: 72 hours before your return flight, we cannot change the shuttle schedule. In the same way, you will have to take a taxi booked with the hotel, at your own expense, with reimbursement from the airline being the only solution. Japan Experience declines all responsibility in the event of last-minute schedule changes. The same applies to the return transfer.
  • Your tour includes a pre-loaded ¥1,500 (approx. €12) transport pre-payment card (suica or Pasmo brand); a 7-day Japan Rail Pass, a 3-day Tokyo metro transport pass and a 2-day Hakone Free Pass. These 4 cards/tickets should cover most of your journeys during your stay. Please note: once the ¥1,500 on the transport pre-payment card has expired, or if the line you are travelling on is not covered by your Japan Rail Pass, you will be responsible for all travel by recharging your transport pre-payment card (at ticket machines in all stations and metro stations).
  • A metro ticket in Tokyo costs around €2, depending on the length of the journey.

The Japan Rail Pass is a nominative train pass for foreign travellers wishing to visit Japan. This pass allows unlimited travel for 7 consecutive days on all Japan Railways (JR) trains throughout Japan. When you are met at the airport by our assistant, you will receive a voucher to be exchanged at a JR office (list of addresses provided in your travel pack). You will be asked to show your passport and fill in a form. It is during this exchange that you will choose the start date for using your Pass. Once your Pass has been activated, it will be valid for 7 consecutive days from the date you choose. To avoid wasting time when you arrive at the airport, you are asked to exchange your voucher once you have arrived in Tokyo.Exchanging it at the airport could delay your airport shuttle. With your Japan Rail Pass in hand, simply go to the station, show your Pass to the ticket inspector at the entrance gates and board any JR train. Almost all trains in Japan are open seating. If you're worried about getting a seat (on a shinkansen, for example), simply go to a ticket office and reserve your seat at no extra charge. The Japan Rail Pass covers all JR and Shinkansen lines in Japan. It does not cover the following journeys :
  • Metro and bus travel in the cities (payable by prepaid transport card, included in your package)

Transfers between stations and hotels (on foot, by bus, metro or taxi)

Journeys on private train lines (not JR)

Journeys on Nozomi and Mizuho ultra-fast shinkansen (Japanese high-speed trains)

journeys made outside the period of validity of the Japan Rail Pass.

Please note: It is not necessary to be in possession of a Japan Rail Pass covering your entire stay. In fact, it is only profitable if it is used to make long journeys between the various stages of your stay (particularly by shinkansen), which are very expensive. In big cities like Tokyo, only about ⅓ of public transport is covered by the Japan Rail Pass, and getting around is relatively cheap (Tokyo metro tickets: €2, daily bus pass in Kyoto: €5). So providing you with a Japan Rail Pass for more than 7 days (14 or 21) would not be cost-effective but, on the contrary, would significantly increase the cost of your trip.
  • If a person taking part in the tour is of Japanese nationality and resident in Japan, or a foreigner but resident in Japan for tax purposes (including students), they will not be able to benefit from the price displayed as they are unfortunately not eligible for the Japan Rail Pass. Please contact us to obtain the price of the tour without the Japan Rail Pass. This person will have to buy the train tickets for the tour directly in Japan. The Kansai Thru Pass is also subject to the same nationality/residence conditions. This is not the case for the Hakone Free pass.

If this person is of Japanese nationality but not resident in Japan, then he or she may qualify for the Japan Rail Pass under certain conditions (see https://www.japan-experience.com/fr/questions-frequentes).

Your visits :

  • You will be met at the airport in English. Your airport assistant will be waiting for you at the customs exit with a sign bearing the name of the booking. He will give you your travel documents and take you to your airport transfer. He will not accompany you to Tokyo (possible, but optional).
  • The guided tour of Shinjuku takes place in groups of no more than 8 people, from 6pm to 8pm. In French or English (depending on the language of the other participants). More details on the meeting point in your travel pack. Dinner is not provided, but your guide will be able to recommend the best places to eat.
  • The guided tour of Gion takes place in groups of no more than 12 people, from 6pm to 7.30-8pm. In French or English (depending on the language of the other participants). More details on the meeting point in your travel pack. Dinner is not included, but your guide will be able to recommend the best places to eat.
  • The discovery of the Japanese countryside (Uji) is a private guided day. Additional costs (entrance fees, meals) are at your own expense.
  • Activity days are subject to change depending on availability.

Your meals:

  • The traditional Japanese dinner and Japanese breakfast (mainly savoury) are included in your ryokan tour. Please let us know if you have any dietary intolerances, and we will pass them on to the ryokan so that it can take them into account when trying to adapt the meals. If the ryokan does not take into account the dietary restrictions transmitted by Japan Experience, we cannot be held responsible and no refund of meals will be given.
  • Breakfasts not included in your package can be added at reception when you arrive at the hotels. However, close to your hotel, you will find numerous cafés serving copious breakfasts which are often tastier than those in hotels, which sometimes have restrictive timetables and a pronounced salty flavour.

Additional services:

  • A pocket wifi is included in your tour. It provides unlimited high-speed Internet access. Your Pocket WiFi will be given to you at the arrival airport.
  • It comes with a small guide to operating your device (don't panic: it's simple to operate) and a pre-paid envelope for returning your device at the end of your stay. Your pocket wifi will work naturally until the last day of your trip to Japan.
  • A maximum of 5 devices (phone, tablet, computer) can be connected to a pocket wifi.
  • A single pocket wifi is provided for a tour order of 1 to 5 people. For an order of 6 people or more, a second pocket wifi will be added automatically and at no extra cost to your booking.
