Usukifugu Yamadaya

Usukifugu Yamadaya 臼杵ふぐ 山田屋

Usukifugu Yamadaya is a fugu (blowfish, pufferfish) restaurant in Tokyo's Nishi-Azabu district that has been serving fugu dishes since 2007.

Usukifugu Yamadaya is the Tokyo branch of a fugu restaurant in Usuki in Oita prefecture in the southern island of Kyushu.

Usukifugu Yamadaya's stylish sweeping entrance leads you into an equally stylish but simple Japanese interior with counter seats, and table seating in a tatami room with legpit. The whole restaurant seats about 20.

As with everything else about Usukifugu Yamadaya, the service is both understated and attentive, with the serving staff attired all in black.

The quiet, elegant atmosphere of Usukifugu Yamadaya makes it ideal as a date spot (unless, perhaps, you or your date happen to score a drop of the tetrodotoxin that the fugu is just as well-known for as its flavor).

Fugu has a very subtle flavor, to put it politely, and, while the sashimi is good, you might prefer it cooked.
